Vibe Coding vs Security Tools: A Risky Business Swap
I just learned the term “vibe coding” and thought it sounded silly but harmless. Then I realized businesses are replacing real security tools with it. That’s not bold, it’s risky.
I recently learned a new word: vibe coding.
The first time I saw it, I laughed. It sounded like a joke. Like something you say when you are half-kidding about building an app with “good energy” and caffeine. Then I looked it up and, honestly, the definition was even more ridiculous.
In plain English, vibe coding is this: you describe what you want, an AI spits out code, you paste it in, and as long as it seems to work, you ship it. Less engineering, more vibes.
At first, I tried to be generous about it.
I pushed aside the years I spent in programming classes, struggling through data structures, logic, and the fundamentals that make your brain feel like it is overheating. I thought, “Okay… maybe this helps people learn. Maybe it lowers the barrier. Maybe it gets more people building.”
It could be a good thing.
Boy was I wrong.
Not because AI coding tools are evil. Not because new builders do not deserve a shortcut. But because I’m now seeing the same mentality creep into places it absolutely does not belong.
Like… security.
And if you are a business owner, that’s where the “funny word” stops being funny.
If This Sounds Hypothetical, Here’s the AWS Wake-Up Call
This is not just a small-business problem. Reports linked a 13-hour AWS service disruption in December to the use of Amazon’s own AI coding tool, Kiro, including an action described as deciding to “delete and recreate the environment.”
Amazon pushed back and said it was misconfigured access controls and human oversight, not “AI by itself.” But that’s the point, too.
AI-assisted tools plus too much permission equals “one mistake” turning into downtime.
Now ask yourself the small business version of that story:
If a company with Amazon’s resources can still end up with an AI-tool situation tied to an outage, do you really want to replace your security software with a vibe-coded product that nobody can fully explain?
Most small businesses do not have:
- teams to review every change,
- a full-time security engineer watching logs,
- an incident response crew on standby,
- budget for “learning experiences” that become downtime.
When something breaks for you, it is not “a limited regional disruption.”
It is missed calls, lost bookings, payroll delays, angry customers, and a weekend spent trying to recover.
Vibe Coding Is Not the Problem, “Vibe Security” Is
Let’s be clear: using AI to help you code is not automatically dangerous.
The danger starts when someone treats AI-generated software like it is trustworthy just because it runs without crashing.
Security is not about whether something “works.” Security is about whether it fails safely, whether it is maintained, whether it can be verified, and whether you can explain what it is doing.
If the person who created your “security tool” cannot explain it, that’s a hard no.
And if the pitch is basically, “Trust me, it passed my vibe check,” that’s not innovation. That’s negligence with a logo.
Why Replacing Real Security Software With Vibe-Coded Tools Can Backfire
You can’t defend what you can’t explain
A lot of vibe-coded products are stitched together from AI suggestions, snippets, and libraries without the creator fully understanding the moving parts.
When something goes wrong, you need real answers:
- What data does it collect?
- Where does that data go?
- What permissions does it require?
- How does it authenticate users?
- How are logs stored?
- How are keys handled?
- What happens when it breaks?
If the “documentation” is basically a few prompts and a Discord link, you are not buying security. You are buying a mystery box.
Open source is not the villain, but “open source roulette” is
You nailed this concern: if they are using open source, do they really own it, do they know where the code is coming from, is it safe?
Open source can be excellent. But responsible teams:
- track dependencies,
- verify sources,
- monitor vulnerabilities,
- patch quickly.
A vibe-coded product might pull packages like it is grabbing ingredients off a shelf in the dark. If the creator cannot tell you which dependencies they use and who is accountable for patching, you are trusting your business to software that might be maintained by nobody.
“It works” is not the same as “it’s safe”
Some sketchy tools look impressive because they produce dashboards, alerts, and charts.
But the real question is: do they detect the right things, or do they just generate noise?
Worse, some tools create a dangerous illusion of protection. You relax because you “have security,” while attackers quietly walk around it.
Weak update practices are a security death sentence
A serious security vendor has:
- a patch process,
- release notes,
- a vulnerability disclosure path,
- a way to handle emergency fixes,
- a roadmap for maintenance.
A vibe-coded product might get updated when the creator feels inspired.
Attackers do not wait for inspiration.
Data handling gets messy fast
Many “AI-first” tools rely on third-party services and cloud components. That is not automatically bad, but you need transparency.
If a vibe-coded “security assistant” can read logs, emails, files, tickets, or customer info, you need to know:
- what it stores,
- who can access it,
- how long it keeps it,
- what happens if the vendor gets breached.
If the answer is unclear, your risk is clear.
Liability lands on you
If a vibe-coded security tool fails and you get breached, your customers will not blame the tool. They will blame you.
Depending on your industry, that can mean contract problems, reputation damage, insurance headaches, downtime, and expensive cleanup.
Security is not the place to “try a cool new thing” with your whole company attached to it.
The Red Flags That Should Make You Walk Away
If you are evaluating a tool and you hear any of these, pause:
- “We built it in a weekend, it’s super lightweight.”
- “The AI basically handles everything.”
- “We don’t really have formal documentation yet.”
- “We’ll add compliance later.”
- “We don’t have a clear patch schedule.”
- “It uses open source, so it’s fine.”
- “Nobody’s complained.”
Also, if the creator cannot explain the basics without getting defensive, that is not confidence. That is a warning label.
So What Should You Do Instead?
You do not need to fear AI tools. You need to put them in the right place.
Use AI to speed up internal workflows, automate repetitive tasks, and assist your team.
But when it comes to actual protection, your baseline should still be:
- proven endpoint protection,
- managed patching and updates,
- real monitoring and alerting,
- secure email and identity controls,
- backup and recovery plans,
- policies your team can follow.
You can absolutely add new tools to your stack, but they should be vetted, understood, and managed. Not adopted because they feel exciting.
Vibes Don’t Stop Breaches
I’m not the best coder. Nowhere near it. And I’m not the spokesperson for how software should be built.
But I am comfortable saying this:
Do not replace traditional security tools with vibe-coded products.
If the people who created your “security tool” cannot explain it, that is a no-no. If they cannot tell you where the code comes from, how it’s maintained, what it depends on, and how they patch it, you are not buying security. You are buying risk.
And risk is expensive.
